Get the extra edge with summer jobs
Different
people have different plans for their summer holidays. What’s
your plan?
Many youngsters nowadays try for a summer job. Some want to
earn money and settle debts or even save towards
next year's costs. While there are others who want a job to add
value to their CV in order to find ultimate career.
Depending
on what you want your choice of job will vary. How about a
job in the tourist industry as the summer holidays loom.
It will be more yielding to contact the smaller employers like
hotels rather than big tour operators. Tour operators often recruit
for the coming summer as soon as the previous season ends while
some others fill in the vacancies by the end of January.
On
the other hand, tourist hotels try and avoid taking new staff
till there is a desperate need for it. They do this to get
a better idea about how many guests they
will be having that year and so how much help they can use.
And you really have to wait until summer for a job. You can
get one
to work on other holidays or even on Sundays. Just consider
how you will be able to buy all that stuff you wanted to buy.
And
certainly you can continue your summer job as a part-time work
during your college.
However if you are between 13 and 16 then
you need to get a working permit. Your employer will have to
apply for it.
You can even establish your own mini-business by doing things
for other people like dog walking, babysitting or housework.
It won’t that difficult to get such a job. But you
may not earn much with this kind of work.
Your
first step to get such job will be to make it known to everyone
that you are in search of a summer job. Tell it to your
neighbours, friends, relatives, etc. Keep a watch on college
notice board as they sometime put up vacancy notices for students just
before vacations. You can also go to the local Jobcentre
or look in your local paper.
However, before you commit anywhere, do inform your parents about
it. They care about you and will help you to stay out of trouble.
Recruitment agency can help you to get hands on a variety of ‘assignments’ that
you could do such as waiting tables at events or working
in hotel kitchens. Here everyday you will face a different
task
and can
serve as quite a learning experience. Be sure about the working
times at such places and that they are comfortable to you.
Remember
a summer job is much more than a time filling activity or just
a source of extra money. Taken seriously
it can really
prove to be a great learning experience and can kick start
your career after you graduate. It might help you understand
how practical
work out there differs from what you imagine by reading theory
at school. Summer job may help you decide the career path
you may want to take. Don’t forget that it is your chance
to make a respectable addition to your CV. |
